Biorefinery for sustainable, reliable, and economical fuel production from energy crops (Contact: Irini Angelidaki) A biorefinery is a facility that integrates several different conversion processes in order to produce food, fuels, power, and high value-added products from biomass. The aim is to maximize the value derived from the feedstock by fully utilizing it, producing multiple products of different value. Production of various energy carriers such as biodiesel, bioethanol, biohydrogen and biogas are coupled with the production of useful by-products, such as pesticides, fodder, and organic fertilizer from the remaining ligno-cellulosic material. Life cycle analysis identifies the most efficient, economic and environmentally sustainable process scheme for conversion of energy crops to biofuels. The bioenergy group cooperates with several other Danish research institutions and companies on this subtopic.
