About the research group

Wastewater Technology has a long and strong history at the Department. At present, we are studying nutrient and xenobiotic compound removal from wastewaters, are developing new biotechnological approaches for wastewater treatment, and are examining how wastewater streams can be managed better to minimize risk and resource consumption. We combine computational, molecular ecological, reactor engineering, and system analytical approaches in our research, and work at the laboratory, pilot- and full-scale in our investigations.

Coordinator: Benedek Plósz

List over projects: Current Projects

The main research topics are:

  •

Domestic and industrial wastewater treatment: Methods for characterization of wastewater, biological removal of N and P from wastewater, innovative wastewater treatment methods, water treatment and water quality in recirculation aquaculture systems

  •

Biological process modelling and control: Modelling of the activated sludge process, kinetic parameter estimation

  •

The fate of organic pollutants: The fate of organic micro pollutants in wastewater treatment plants

  •

Sustainable wastewater handling & impact assessment: Waste/wastewater design, reuse of grey wastewater in household, chemical hazard assessment of wastewater

  •

Microbial ecology in wastewater treatment processes: Detection and identification of microorganisms in wastewater treatment processes, spatial distribution of microbial members in biological nitrogen removal systems, quantification of microorganisms based on phylogeny and function in bioreactors
