Sorption geochemistry (contact: Rasmus Jakobsen) Sorption geochemistry is a large topic and our focus is currently limited to the mineral calcite and carbonate aquifer materials and natural Fe-oxides from water works and in soils and aquifers. For the calcite and carbonate rocks the sorption of arsenite, arsenate and phosphate and competition between these is being studied using radiotracers, enabling us to study the sorption behavior at natural concentration. Due to the low concentrations of arsenic allowed in drinking water, even low natural concentrations may be detrimental. In case of the Fe-oxides we are focusing on the sorption of chromium and arsenate in soils polluted by wood impregnation the so called CCA compounds. The sorption capacity and the long term stability of the sorption complex is closely linked to the stability of the Fe-oxide. This in turn will determine the feasibility of long-term limiting of leaching and current field and laboratory experiments try to address this.
