The Department of Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Environment) advertises a fully funded 3-year PhD position in Environmental Engineering.
 
The goal of the PhD project is to develop a method to improve water and sediment quality in an economically feasible manner. To achieve this goal, the PhD Student will employ the microbial fuel cell technology MFC to stimulate microbial processes. The overall project is in cooperation between NIRAS, Aarhus university and DTU Environment.
 
The PhD Student will be placed in the Environmental Chemistry Section. This section, with ca. 20 scientific employees, is dedicated to fundamental and applied research in environmental toxicology and chemistry. The overall aim is to gain scientific knowledge that can strongly contribute to the identification, quantification, and decision-making in relation to environmental problems caused by emissions of existing and emerging chemical contaminants from the technosphere to the environment.
 
Responsibilities and tasks

  • The successful candidate will have a solid base in Environmental Engineering or similar, and have very good grades.
  • The candidate will have a mathematical way of thinking, are skilled in chemical analysis, and you have hands-on experience with experimental work (preferably with microbial fuel cells).
  • A strong interest in electrobiochemistry, physics and engineering.  The candidate will be responsible for developing, testing and implementing a novel technology for clean-up of polluted environments.
  • Be fluent in English (oral and written), and be able to communicate with Danish authorities in Danish. 
  • Have a high engagement and a drive, a good sense of humour and enjoy acting in a truly international department.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.
 
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Professor Stefan Trapp and Professor Anders Baun at DTU Environment.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 3 years.
 
Workplace
Workplace is primarily DTU Lyngby Campus, and secondary at the project partners.
