The Department of Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Environment) advertises a fully funded 3-year PhD position in “Exchange of gases and volatile compounds between groundwater and the atmosphere”. The project aims at investigating and quantifying the dynamics of interchange of gases and energy between different compartments of coupled hydrosystems. This research is part of a project funded by the Danish Research Council for Independent Research (DFF) and links well to other projects currently ongoing at DTU Environment.
The PhD student will be placed in the Water Resources Engineering Section. This section, with ca. 30 scientific employees, covers many aspects related to the management, protection and remediation of freshwater in natural settings including surface water (rivers, lakes) and groundwater (shallow, deep aquifers).

Responsibilities and tasks
The successful candidate will have a background in earth sciences/engineering, environmental modeling, geochemistry or environmental microbiology. The candidate will develop sensor-based methods to quantify the dynamics of the interchange of gases and energy under abiotic conditions, as well as in presence of microbial activity. Experience with modeling of subsurface systems and/or with environmental microbiology techniques is an advantage. Willingness to perform research at the interface between different disciplines and to travel and work in an international environment is essential. The candidate will have excellent skills in English (oral and written) and will work in a team consisting of scientists from DTU Environment, as well as international partners in the project (Colorado School of Mines, USA and University of Stuttgart, Germany).

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate Professor Massimo Rolle and Postdoctoral Researcher Klaus Mosthaf.
