DTU Department for Environmental and Resource Engineering (DTU Sustain) invites applications for a position as Professor in Indoor Environment and Health in the Indoor Environment Group.

The focus of the research area is on people and their health, comfort, and performance when exposed to the indoor environment in a wide range of settings: at home, during transportation, at work, and in schools. We perform extensive studies, both under well-controlled conditions in the laboratory and in the field to discover which indoor environments are optimal for their occupants. Based on these insights, we develop energy-efficient solutions for buildings, and heating, ventilation, and cooling systems that provide an optimal indoor environment. We disseminate our results through many different channels, by teaching students, by submitting papers to scientific journals, conferences, and technical/professional magazines, and by working towards international standardization. Collaboration with industry is of the utmost importance to us, both for the transfer of knowledge and for the development of new products.

The professorship is dedicated to linking human environmental exposures indoors to health, wellbeing, and performance, thus combining engineering with public health, perception psychology and medicine. This requires thorough understanding of the interdisciplinary research collaboration anchored around engineering.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The position involves teaching, research and scientific dissemination at a very high level within the field of indoor environment with a focus on developing guidelines and solutions for conditions in public and residential buildings, so that they promote health, efficient work, and learning. You are expected to play a leading role in the development of new and existing courses offered by the university and in the further academic development of one or several of the following research areas:

  • Assessment of indoor environmental quality
  • Human responses (perception, health, physiology) to various indoor environmental conditions
  • Indoor environment and work performance and learning
  • Solutions for achieving healthy and productive buildings
  • Experimental digital techniques for indoor environment research

Other primary tasks involve:

  • Taking a lead role in fundraising
  • Interdisciplinary collaborative research and innovation projects at national and international level
  • Services to public administrations and the industry
  • Dissemination of research results through scientific publications and towards the industry
  • Administrative duties, including academic assessment work on all levels

The qualified candidate should have an internationally recognized academic and professional profile. More specifically, the following qualifications should be met:

  • A high degree of original scientific production at the international level that has contributed to the further development of the area of healthy buildings, including their effects on work performance and learning
  • Significant experimental research including use of advanced measuring techniques and human subject experiments
  • Documented successful teaching experience at different levels within the courses offered by the university, particularly at the PhD level. Experience with integrating sustainability concepts, digitalization and didactics (e.g. the use of blended teaching methods and online methods)
  • Documented experience in research management, including management tasks linked to national or international projects, research programs, conferences, etc.
  • Documented experience in coordination of a research team, incl. scientists and technical staff

You are expected to take a lead role in teaching at the BEng, BSc, MSc, and PhD levels. You will be expected to learn Danish and be able to teach in Danish after 3 years. DTU can provide Danish language courses.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The salary for the position will be determined by the applicant’s qualifications and in agreement with the relevant union. DTU Environmental and Resource Engineering
DTU Environmental and Resource Engineering is one of the largest university departments specializing in environmental and resource engineering in Europe.
